Tbilisi (GBC) - Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Monday said a state project for freight rail modernisation, scheduled for completion this year, was aiming to enhance the domestic network’s “speed, safety and capacity” and increase its throughput to 48 million tonnes per year.
He added the measures would “further boost” cargo turnover in the Georgian corridor and generate more income not only for the railways but also for “all links involved in the logistics chain”.
“In recent years, one of the key areas of economic growth has been transport, logistics, and warehousing. The most significant developments have occurred in this sector, with railway transportation emerging as the top priority”, Davitashvili said during a press briefing at the Government Administration earlier today.
“We regularly meet with international companies to discuss future prospects for consolidating new cargo in our corridor. This means that on one hand, Georgia can enhance its transit role, and on the other hand, by improving transport and logistics infrastructure, we can also boost our export potential”, he added.
Davitashvili revealed plans for 600 block trains to transit through the Middle Corridor - a logistics route connecting Central Asia and China to Europe via the South Caucasus through Georgia - with agreements in place for new cargo shipments from China. He underscored these developments would serve as “important stimulus” for increasing the Corridor’s cargo turnover.
