Tbilisi (GBC) - Vedant Patel, the Deputy Spokesperson of the United States State Department, on Tuesday said Washington was focused on engaging with the Georgian Dream leadership to “emphasise their strong responsibility” for upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms amid ongoing protests against their decision to delay European Union accession talks until 2028.
In a press briefing, Patel also expressed “deep concerns” over reports of use of excessive police force against demonstrators, as well as arrests of, and attacks on journalists.
He urged the Georgian Government to ensure peaceful nature of protests while “strictly adhering” to the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.
Patel highlighted the principles were “essential” to Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
