Tbilisi (GBC) – As of the preliminary data of 2024, production of wheat increased by 1% compared to the same period of the previous year and consisted of 148.5 thousand tons,- according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
Production of barley decreased by 8.5% year-on-year set 48.4 thousand tons. Production of maize equaled 223.0 thousand tons, which is 16.8% more than in the same period of the previous year. Production of potato increased by 12.1 percent and consisted of 221.1 thousand tons. Besides, production of vegetables equaled 134.3 thousand tons, which is 5.4 percent lower compared to 2023.
According to the preliminary data of 2024, average yield of barley and vegetables have been decreased compared to the previous year, besides average yield of wheat, maize and potato has been increased. According to the survey results, average yield of wheat consisted of 2.8 t/ha, average yield of barley – 2.0 t/ha, average yield of maize – 3.1 t/ha, average yield of potato – 15.6 t/ha, average yield of vegetables - 10.2 t/ha.
According to the preliminary data, in 2024 sown areas of annual crops amounted to 195.7 thousand hectares, which is 4.0 percent less than the same period of the previous year. However sown area of winter crops decreased by 8.1 percent and amounted to 61.3 thousand hectares and sown areas of spring crops decreased by 2.0 percent and consisted of 134.4 thousand hectares.
Sown area of maize took the biggest share in the sown areas of annual crops and equaled 71.2 thousand hectares. Sown area of wheat was 54.0 thousand hectares, sown area of barley – 24.1 thousand hectares, sown area of potato – 14.1 thousand hectares, sown areas of fodder crops – 11.2 thousand hectares, sown area of vegetables – 10.2 thousand hectares and sown areas of the remaining crops 10.9 thousand hectares.
According to the preliminary data, in 2024, 243.6 thousand tons of fruit were produced in the country, which is 25.2 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. As for the distribution of fruits by species during the reference period, 89.7 thousand tons of pome fruit were produced which is 46.8 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. Production of stone fruit consisted of 77.1 thousand tons (22.0 percent higher), production of nuts – 52.4 thousand tons (14.7 percent higher), production of subtropical fruit – 16.7 thousand tons (10.7 percent lower), production of citruses – 55.4 thousand tons (decreasing by 22.7 percent), and Berries – 7.7 thousand tons (32.8 percent higher).
Besides this, in 2024, 321.5 thousand tons of grapes were produced, which is 45.7 percent higher than in previous year, and 55.4 thousand tons of citrus, which is 22.7 percent lower than the previous year.
